Please tell us the concept of the Refraction Festival.

The concept for Refraction Festival came out of the different work that I like to create and curate in terms of Festivals.  Whether I’m working on an app like Generate, or a festival like New Forms before or Refraction, or other installations and projects, to me I think about them all as art projects.  So when I came up with the concept for Refraction, I really wanted to create a project that travelled around the world online, and spoke to the different realities that people were dealing with around being in quarantine, but do it in a way where it really just focused on the art, and no more and no less than that.  So that the artists themselves could really speak through music and visuals around how they were feeling and what they were thinking and going through.

NewForms Festival

What made you decide to hold the Refraction Festival this time?

I was already conceptualizing a festival this year.  After passing on New Forms to the next generation, and moving back to my hometown of Toronto, a lot of people were asking me about doing a festival.  Then Public Records in New York asked me to curate a summer festival, and I was quite excited about this.  It was the perfect next step for me in terms of curating post- New Forms, and I had been ancillary involved in some of the curating there already, and a lot of friends and artists I respected were playing there.  So I had started to really formulate a lot of thoughts around how the festival would look, in terms of both artists, but also the concepts I wanted to dive into.
Then when COVID hit, a friend of mine called me, an old friend who I talk to almost every day, and he said, now that its COVID, you should really do a festival, especially around the launch of Generate and speaking to the time we are in.
I thought to myself, this will be a really interesting opportunity to do something different than I have ever done before, but more importantly, it will give artists a chance to really speak around the issues they are dealing with.  At the time everything from just being quarantined due to COVID, to no performances, to the Black Lives Matters movement were all playing out, and I felt it was really important for artists to be able to speak in their own way, and be supported properly around that.
From there once I start digging into a concept and thinking about how it will happen, I get very focused and obsessed with it, day in and day out.  So I started to talking to artists and discussing different concepts with them, and before long there was a festival online spanning the entire globe.

The Refraction distribution was very unique and spectacular, with each artist having their own personality.
What criteria did the artist pick up this time?

Thank you, the response so far has really been amazing.  What I did was simply choose artists and collectives across the globe I felt would be interesting together, almost like a global conversation.  Then I basically told them what we were doing, and left the themes pretty wide open.  I spoke to all the artists around their ideas, and started molding them together, in terms of the schedule, spaces, and partners from there.  So by the end it was basically like create one whole out of all those piece.

Is this the first online event for Malcom? (If not, please tell me the online event you did before) Please tell us if there are any positive points or issues that you felt after trying this time.

This was the first online event I did of this scale.  But of course, I have been directing Generate for the past 7 years, so I have a lot of experience in the digital online space.  Then of course with New Forms I have about 20 years experience.  So I basically took all of that experience to create something new.  The joke I make is that I thought doing an online festival would be easier......but of course it wasn’t:-)

Many online events are taking place all over the world today. Please let us know if there are any events that Malcom found interesting.

I really liked the Club Q series, as well as the Get Together w/ PS:1, and the Digital Fort by Faded, and the festival that NTS did as well.  Also I like the ongoing series that Nowadays has curated.  United We Stream has done a good job of really bringing a lot of the more club scene together as well, from different genres and spaces and cities. Also Sinjin Hawke and Zora Jones did a very cool space / installation, and the Well Now WTF series has been amazing.  It really goes on and on and on... There will continue to be many interesting festivals online that are curated in different ways and I look forward to seeing them.

What is the current situation in Canada? Please tell us about the night culture and the situation in the city.

Currently everything is in lockdown, and we are just trying to be patient with the situation.  That’s all you can really do right now.  Supporting the independent artists, spaces and centers is now more important than ever.

Also, in Japan, there is a situation where online is temporarily forced, and especially the video scene has undergone dramatic evolution. How about Canada?

Yes the online scene for sure has shot up, just like everywhere.  This is the thing that this has brought by the pandemic.  It has made us think differently, whether we like it or not.

I think that art has good digital expression and analog expression.
I feel that the events created by Malcom have a very good balance between the two. Is there anything you are aware of when creating the event?

I really think about a festival, and the art practices I am part of as a full ecosystem, and I always try to tell a narrative thorough that.  I try to keep all artistic practices as organic as possible to what the artist wants to do, and then work with the artists to help realize this to the greatest level that they can.

Please tell us the Generate app that you have been developing.

Generate allows you to become your own creator.  Build unique effects, own a style all your own, make videos, add music, and create endless photo and video artwork, all in a matter of minutes.  Its one of the most powerful apps out there to really create incredible visuals, videos and images.

With live and AI effects, thousands of potential filter presets, and effects that move to the beat, the Generate expands on creative possibilities for both photo, video and music editing.   With design features to create new filters in seconds, the app is built for the creative process of today, with aesthetics ranging from beautiful camera filters to glitch aesthetics based on the creators palette.

Generate supports creators, through its ongoing events like Refraction Festival and our Creators Program in app.  In addition to the free version, the new Generate Pro Subscription gives users access to ongoing new effects and features.  The concept for the app comes out of our studio, where artists and musicians curate and build events and installations.  We give this to all artists and creators for free.

We were one of the first apps in the world to build effects like we have, and so this new version is really exciting.

Please give us a final word.

We are especially excited to see what the Japanese users create with the app, as there is such an amazing tradition of digital content, fashion, brands, and creative arts that comes out of Japan.  We are going to be giving the app for Free to top creators in the field, through our Creators Program, which can be found in the app.  Also, we are being asked now by different festivals to partner and have our creators make work for the festivals, so stay tuned and get involved!

Most of all thank you for the interview, Manami -San!
